SCIENTIFIC TECHNICIAN 2 (ST2)
Fish Program – Fish Management Division
Ridgefield, Washington – Clark County
Season Length: 10 months
March 1 – December 31
This role, based out of the Region 5 office in Ridgefield, involves crucial tasks in preserving and perpetuating fish, wildlife, and ecosystems while ensuring sustainable recreational and commercial opportunities.
The primary responsibilities include monitoring salmonid populations, such as Chinook, coho, chum, and steelhead, along with other species in the Columbia River and its tributaries.
This position will play a vital role in providing essential data for assessing stock status and maintaining sustainable fisheries.
The technician will work on various projects, including sampling duties at the Modrow weir and Kalama Falls Hatchery on the Kalama River, test fishing on the Columbia River, and stream survey sampling on the North Fork Lewis River.
Tagging chinook on Weir – Photo credit- WDFW Duties Here is what you will be doing, Kalama River trap, weir, and hatchery sampling: Assisting with the installation, maintenance, operation and removal of monitoring structures and devices for adult salmonid monitoring.
Inspects trap and weir infrastructure daily to ensure maximum efficiency and informs appropriate project lead of status.
Capturing, handling, identifying, enumerating and tagging and/or marking adult salmonids for broodstock, mark/recapture programs and distribution monitoring.
Works collaboratively with hatchery staff to sample salmonids for coded wire tags (CWT), DNA, scales, sex and fork length using established methods and protocols.
Spring Chinook test fishing: Monitoring and observation aboard contracted commercial vessels actively fishing the mainstem Columbia River.
Identifies and enumerates species composition of catch including spring Chinook visual stock identification (VSI).
Records capture condition and release condition details, gear information, drift duration, and location.
Samples kept and released catch for CWT, DNA, scales, weight, sex and fork length using established methods and protocols.
North Fork Lewis River seining, stream survey, trap, and weir sampling: Participates in seining activities for collecting wild juvenile fall Chinook salmon and helps transport fish to the hatchery for tagging.
Checks traps at Cedar Creek weir and fish ladder; captures, handles, identifies, and tags adult salmonids; records data.
Assists with weekly carcass surveys for adult fall Chinook; handles and samples carcasses; records data on scale cards.
Maintains sampling kits for carcass surveys.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work Setting, including hazards: Approximately 90% of the time this position is in a non-office, field environment at weirs and traps or conducting spawning ground surveys by either foot or boat.
Includes snorkeling in cold, fast-flowing/whitewater conditions.
While working outdoors, candidates may be exposed to extreme temperatures, with the possibility of daytime highs greater than 100°F and daytime lows less than 30°F, with wind speeds of greater than 25 mph.
Duties are often conducted on wet slippery surfaces.
Work requires employee to lift, either with or without assistance, large, live and dead fish, typically up to 30 lbs and rarely over 100 lbs; repetitively carry loads up to 70 pounds for short distances over rough terrain; hike up to 6 miles per day over rough terrain under adverse weather conditions; and climb in and out of motorized and non-motorized boats.
Employee will accurately record repetitive data under adverse environmental conditions for long periods of time.
Spawned out salmon carcasses can contain very strong odors.
The remaining 10% of work time is in an office or laboratory setting.
Schedule: Work is performed 24/7 and is non-scheduled Travel Requirements: Most of the duties are conducted in the field away from the duty station.
Daily travel from the duty station to and from field locations is required with either a departmental issued vehicle or personal vehicle.
Overnight travel may be required as part of the job.
Tools and Equipment: May include: the use of basic hand and carpentry tools, winches, pulleys and blocks, motorized and non-motorized watercraft, 4x4 vehicles; the ability to tow boats; the use of 200’ beach seines, PIT tag injectors, PIT tag readers, CWT detectors, GPS units, weighing scales, snout knife, hemostats, mobile digital data collection devices, and agency computers.
Customer Interactions: Interacting with other departmental personnel, personnel from other agencies, commercial fishers, and the public.
Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR Graduation from high school or GED including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.
Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.
Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: Basic CPR and First Aid course within 1 month of hire.
Required agency and other state trainings within 1 month of hire.
Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft dependent on supervisory direction, position need and?training availability.
WDFW snorkel training and certification, with completion within?6 months of hire and?renewal expected annually.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all the following: Ability to: Identify salmonids and other fish species in adult life stage.
Identify salmonid redds.
Operate handheld GPS and data devices.
Work alone in remote locations.
Work well with others in both a field and office setting.
Knowledge of: Resistance board and fixed panel adult fish weirs.
Fish marking and tagging protocols.
Fishery monitoring, observation, and general sampling techniques.
Sport and commercial fishing gear types and methods.
The basic operations of motorized vessels.
How to operate CWT and PIT tag detectors.
